I would like to set up my old iphone as an ipod but itunes won't let me.

I have an old iPhone 3gs that I just restored and now is in the "connect to itunes" screen, but when i connect to iTunes I get a message that the phone "cannot be activated. Go to your nearest Apple Store.." I don't really want to activate the phone, I just want bypass the "connect to iTunes" screen and set it up to use as an iPod. Is there any way I can bypass that screen without using iTunes.?

you can use sn0wbreeze v2.9.6 to create a custom firmware with the "Activate your iphone" option selected as YES.

this will bypass the activation
