Just plug the phone into your computer, run Redsn0w, and click on the Activate option I think.
EDIT: I think you have to use the Install Cydia option that will jailbreak and hacktivate at the same time.

Thanks. Do you suggest that I should first flash / upgrade to 4.2.1. and then try redsnow?
it looks like my friend tried to upgrade to higher version which had flashed this baseband and somehow he had restored to 3.1.2
redsnow complains if I select 3.1.2 firmware
any suggestions /
thanks a lot

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable with the 3G will weigh in, but as far as I know, since you're already on a non-unlockable baseband, I don't see the harm in upgrading to 4.2.1 if you don't mind the newer iOS.
You could also try restoring using a pre-activated, pre-jailbroken ipsw version of 3.1.2 if you prefer iOS 3. That's what I used to do.

Yes, go to 4.2.1. Then you can use redsnow 0.9.6rc16 or up to rc19 from here: https://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files/
Point redsnow to a 4.2.1 firmware (after you have restored to 4.2.1 in iTunes). Then select to install Cydia. That will jailbreak and hactivate at the same time. If you wish to unlock with the iPad baseband you can install that too with redsnow 0.9.6rc16. After that install ultrasnow from Cydia to unlock.

thank you very much guys. Much apprecieated.
Now the itunes complains that "The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported"
i have to figure a way to flash 4.2.1 firmware before entering into redsn0w

Is there any update for this or are we stuck with the iPad baseband and no GPS?
