You first need to check to see if you have SHSHs saved for 5.0.1, if no SHSHs are saved for 5.0.1 then you can't upgrade to it. Get TinyUmbrella from thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com, click Save SHSHs and see if they are there. Then we can discuss further what you need to do.

So your on the iPad baseband...
Save your shsh's locally & then stitch it to an Ipsw, once you've done that, DFU the phone & do a manual restore in iTunes.

Apple, iPhone and iPad News | ModMyi - Using Redsn0w to Stitch your SHSH Blobs to Your Firmware
I believe you can do this process with a custom ipsw as well, which I do believe you need anyhow with the iPad baseband. Somebody please correct me if I am wrong, I haven't gotten a grasp of this stitching business yet.
You now need to move on to stitching the 5.0.1 SHSHs with redsn0w to a custom firmware that you have to create with Sn0wbreeze or Redsn0w. If you need help on this, I would suggest googling a guide on how to create a custom 5.0.1 ipsw with Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze. Either one works fine, just choose one. You'll need to use Redsn0w anyhow for the stitching.

+1 Follow the info given above & you can't go wrong. Creating a custom firmware will never touch the baseband unless you ask it to (which some folk do when they want to install the iPad baseband).
When you stitch shsh to a firmware, it'll create a custom firmware. Redsn0w will do it the same as sn0wbreeze or pwnagetool.

Great, so are you saying that you can just put in a stock ipsw and stitch SHSHs to it, that creates a custom firmware which has no baseband upgrade? I'm trying to understand this process, I just found out about it today.

so open redsn0w and select the 5.0.1 (9a402) on custom ispw?

Basically the same kinda way 4.1 for a 3GS works.

Also what about what the OP was asking, I was under the impression this method works for iPhones as well even though the guide says iPod only.
Edit: nvm you answered it lol.
