Restore it in iTunes, buy a sim tray (tons on eBay)
No way to tell from a picture if it's a 4 or 4s.Last edited by blkcadi; 03-16-2012 at 07:09 PM.

The iphone doesnt show up on itunes to even click shift restore because it has a pass lock - and if you see in the picture there is no space for a simcard tray, there was never a simcard input on the phone...

So it's a cdma phone then, your friend doesn't have the password?
Put in recovery mode, then update in iTunes.

Hmmmm, well here in the states, Verizon and Sprint use CDMA (no sim) iPhones, and AT&T uses a sim card,. there are not interchangeable. Factory Unlocked iPhones have a sim card (GSM) like AT&T and T-Mobile etc.
If your carrier requires a sim card (GSM) then you can not use a cdma phone.

Restoring it would also make it easier to sell. You could call Apple and make sure that it has not been turned in as lost or stolen and the imei has not been blocked, which would make it unusable on any network.

You will have to just let iTunes do it's thing and restore to 5.1 as Apple is no longer signing 5.0.1

You probably only have one choice, which is 5.1 considering you said the device isn't being recognized in the current state it is in. Putting it into recovery mode will allow iTunes to recognize and restore it, but it won't allow other tools to pull SHSHs or read if there are any SHSHs available already to restore to a earlier firmware version than 5.1.
