I'm looking to buy a 3GS to replace my slow 3G. If I buy a factory unlocked phone in the US, do I still need to insert an officially supported carrier SIM (i.e. AT&T) to activate it, or can I just pop in any SIM from any carrier? My current setup works because I jailbroke, unlocked and hacktivated, but it appears Apple is making this harder to do and I 'm not sure I'm up to it again.

if its a factory unlocked phone, simply put in any gsm sim. if it does not recognize the sim card, then sync to itunes with that sim card in the phone. if its a factory unlocked iphone, itunes will look up your IMEI on its database. if its there (factory unlocked), then itunes will unlock it. it will have a message like "Congratulations, your iphone is now unlocked"
