I posted this in another thread and it should help you out.
Can anyone verify if I can upgrade/preserve BB?

The only difference is you have a very nice looking baseband there
. Use a custom firmware, use a guide that will show you how if you don't know how. Preserve that gorgeous baseband and unlock it with Ultrasn0w in Cydia.

Is the jailbreak in that case a tethered one..
I would prefer an untethered jailbreak.

If anything goes wrong while upgrading in this way, how can I go back to 4.3.1, the one I have now. I have the blobs saved for that firmware on cydia

Use TinyUmbrella to save your SHSH blobs, you can get TinyUmbrella from here. You can use the SHSH blobs to downgrade if you want too.
But remember, if something does go wrong, and you for some reason update using the wrong firmware file, then your baseband will be updated and you cannot downgrade your baseband.

I'm sorry for hijacking the thread, but it's regarding tinyumbrella. Mine says
saved SHSHs for iPhone:
iPhone4 4.3.3(8j2)
iPhone4 4.3.4(8k2)
iphone4 4.3.5(8L1)
Does that mean my blob is saved and that I can restore my iphone to working condition if my iOS5 upgrade fail?

I've been trying to upgrade all morning. My itune always error 1602. I've read that that error is associated with incorrectly putting my phone in DFU mode. However, I recovered from DFU and put it back multiple time but the problem has not gone away. Is there anything I'm missing? Should I update my itune to the newest version before trying again (i'm not sure if my version is the latest)?

Ya I would make sure it's updated and try dfu mode and then update

I'm using redsn0w. Put the phone in pwned dfu mode, and then update using the custom IWPS. Still having the same problem. Any other things I should look at to troubleshoot?

Does it give you an error code?

At last with fingers crossed, I updated to 5.0.1 just an hour before 5.1 was launched, while holding on to 1.59.00 baseband. After upgrading I got no service once, then I manually chose carrier settings and since three days I hadn't any problem.
But I lost my personal hotspot after the update. I can't tether my iPad to iPhone for cellular data plan.
