Default 3GS old bootrom unlock/jailbreak question

Ok, so I just got a 3GS, 4.0, BB 05.13.04 and want to upgrade to iOS5. I've unlocked my last 2 iPhones using pwnage tool, but never redsn0w. I've read a few how to's and want to make sure I've got this down before I start.
You use redsn0w to make a custom ipsw of iOS5, then put the phone into pwned dfu mode and restore the phone in iTunes with the custom ipsw. Now, from here I've read to launch cydia and install ultrasn0w to unlock. Will the custom ipsw have cydia installed or will I have to use redsn0w again to get it? That's the part I'm not sure on...

think twice before upping to 5.0. it's a "tethered" JB. you'll also want to make sure you preserve the baseband.
i think creating the cusom ISPW takes care of that tho.
and yes, im pretty sure Cydia installs with redsn0w.
you can also backup your SHSH using iFaith before the upgrade

wait for some more expert advice before attempting the upgrade. dont wanna limit your options by jumping the gun

I'm fairly certain my phone would be untethered... And yeah I'm definitely not jumping the gun, I'd hate to lose the old baseband.

    From the Dev-Team redsn0w page:
Update #13: With today’s official iOS5 release, redsn0w has been updated to 0.9.9b5 to include the public URLs for the IPSW files. This way, first-time iOS5 jailbreakers don’t need to supply the IPSW file manually. It’s still a tethered jailbreak on all except the old-bootrom iPhone3GS, and it doesn’t apply to iPad2 or the upcoming iPhone4S.

Yes, your iphone will be untethered and can be unlocked by Ultrasn0w 1.2.4.

    Hi
    Sorry to hi-jack this thread.
I have similar question. I want to update my brother 3gs to iOS 5 and unlock it. The phone is currently running 4.2.1 and unlocked for T-mobile used. I believe it's an old bootrom. If I want to created a custome IPSW file so I can preserve the baseband, which program I should use? and where I can d/l from.
    thanks for help

Well then... It appears despite what the Dev-Team said, I have a tethered jailbreak with iOS5 and baseband 05.13.04 I'll just deal with it for now, but out of curiosity, is it possible to roll back to iOS4? I'm not too concerned with it since you can boot semi-tethered, but I'd be nice as an option.

If it's 4.2.1 then I believe it's on the iPad firmware (go to settings > general > about > modem firmware).
This was one of the guides I looked at to see what to do. Redsn0w is what you need...

That is your baseband not your bootrom. Baseband is important for unlocking (and has nothing to do with jailbreaking), bootrom for jailbreaking. You can use idetector to find out what bootrom you have.

For me, when I use idetector to check the bootroom it said " Your [3gs] contain the Old Bootrom" which mean I can use redsn0w create custom IPSW iOS 5 then restore to the iphone for untethered jailbreak right ?
aftet that I can use ultrasn0w to unlock ?

Then you are good for unlocking and jailbreaking on 5.0 as long as you use a custom firmware.

Make sure you go into "pwned DFU" mode using redsn0w before you attempt a restore.
And yes, if you have the old bootrom it will be untethered.

Can I use redsn0w 0.9.9b7 or I have to use 0.9.9b5 ? Does it matter?
