Default 3GS boots, recognized by iTunes, but no Service, wifi, BT, IMIE, ICCID - hardware?

I've seen there are other similar threads but I wanted to ask re. my 3GS (new BootRom) which is a mystery, unless of course it has a hardware problem.

To start with, I don't know the history of the phone, as it came in a trade-in deal at very little cost. I was told that it's from another European country (I'm in Europe) and that it was jailbroken. It was described as being stuck in Recovery mode.

When I plugged it into my Mac (10.6), it wasn't recognized by iTunes and it was stuck on the Recovery screen. I put it into DFU mode and iTunes recognized it, and said it was in Recovery mode and I had to restore. I built a custom ipsw with Pwnagetool and 4.2.1 and followed the usual instructions, but when trying to restore thru iTunes (option clicked and chose Custom ipsw) it always ended with message that the "device isn't eligible for the release", etc. I tried 4.3.2 and 4.3.3, all of which ended with the above message. I then tried 4.1 and the restore started and seemed to be going okay, but after a couple of minutes it stopped at around 99%, and then after about an hour said there was an error 1002.

I'd already jailbroken and unlocked a 3G with Redsnow, Ultrasnow and SAM (had no wifi), which went fine.

I tried the same method with the 3GS, using 4.1, with update to 6.15 baseband, and it completed the process, but the phone is now stuck in the following situation:
    - starts up, turns off, goes into DFU, charges battery all normally
    - booted, it has a normal home screen, with Cydia installed; iOS version is 4.1
    - no service (always searching), no wifi, no bluetooth, no IMIE, no ICCID, no Modem Firmware
    - the message that comes out is "Restore Needed. The phone can't make or receive calls. Restore from iTunes."
    - the phone is recognized for a few minutes in iTunes 10.2.2, which says that a new software version is available (4.3.5)
    - after a few minutes, the phone reboots, loses connection with iTunes: this loop continues indefinitely

P.S. I downloaded f0recast 1.3 for Mac, from two different sites, but the app doesn't open, so I can't check Firmware or Baseband.

Does this sound like a hardware problem?

I hate to tell u this but ur basband chip has went out due to the iPad flash I am betting u did not use the right redsnow ur device is a glorified iPod without wifi. I have had this happen to like 5 or 6 iPhones best thing I can tell u is see if it has a warranty and send it in to apple in dfu mode they won't be able to get it to restore so they will just send u a new one and they pay for shipping

No, I used the right Redsnow and followed the usual procedure listed everywhere, and which I'd used before to jailbreak a 3G. No warranty.

As there's now a way to revert back to previous basebands, would there be any chance of doing so, then "restarting" from there?

The problems with this phone are many: first and foremost, I don't know much about it, so don't know if it really was working before I got it; for all I know it might've had the same problems as now. I was told that it was foreign, jailbroken, stuck on Recovery screen, and had previously been working, though I don't know how thoroughly it had been tested. I received it third-hand.

The fact that I've never had service in the few days I've been testing it makes me think it's more hardware than software related.

Just to recap, this iPhone 3GS new bootroom:
    - was stuck on Recovery
    - got out of Recovery via RecBoot (Mac)
    - recognized by iTunes and could go into DFU
    - attempted jailbreak and baseband update to 6.15 using Redsnow, with Cydia installed
    - now boots, is recognized by iTunes, can be turned off, can go into DFU mode, reports having iOS 4.1, but....
    - shows no service, wifi, bluetooth, firmware, baseband, etc.
    - I'd like to check baseband, but f0recast 1.3 for Mac doesn't open on my iMac with 10.6.8

The right process does not tell u to use the 4.3.3 redsnow and not the one that came out with 4.1 witch is what I was using when I downgraded for 4.3.5 to 4.1 and installed the iPad baseband witch is what causes this I believe I had 5 devices mess up and I changed my redsnow and works just fine now ur devices is gone I have found no way to fix it other then send it in to apple in dfu and get a new one under warranty sorry

I didn't install 4.3.5 with Redsnow. I used the latest version of Redsnow to install 4.1 (no downgrade) and to update the baseband to 6.15, as per the usual procedure with Redsnow.

Lots of info on the net re. this problem, but I'd like to just stop, take a deep breath, and proceed with the best possible advice at this point. That is, if it's a software problem. If anybody in the know can provide some info it'd be greatly appreciated. Probably nothing to lose at this point. The phone's not under warranty.

Anything I can do on the software side? I have a Mac, but I can boot into Windows if that would give me more/better tools.

Hardware? I've read that opening the phone up and disconnecting the battery has solved problems. No idea if that's what's wrong with mine or if it would solve it, but seeing as the battery doesn't last long anyway I was thinking of changing it.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

Anyone tried to solve the corrupted baseband problem (if that's indeed what I have here) using the method a few people have detailed on the web? Refers primarily to problems created by the 6.15 baseband, if I read correctly.

That is, take apart the iPhone and remove the logic board, in order to separate the logic board from the battery. Doing this supposedly "clears the memory that handles the boot process" and does what I assume is the equivalent of a Reset, like an SMC reset on Macs.

These procedures refer to Windows users, and call for using the iREB application, in order to fix the Recovery Mode Loop problem. I would imagine there's something similar for Mac now too.

I've taken a lot of Macs and a few iPhones apart, so I wouldn't be afraid to do this. And my iPhone battery is a bit weak now anyway, so could take the opportunity to put in a new one.

If anyone's done this I'd love to hear your experience.

    Thanks.

This might work but I am not sure it's software I believe that in the flashing of the ipad baseband if fries the basband chip I remember a tweet from musclenerd a while ago saying something about when fetching the iPad baseband data that apple Has moved the place it was located on there server or something in to that affect so if ur using a old redsnow then it's pulling from the wrong spot and has nothing to write to the basband chip witch fries it I believe.

I don't know. I've flashed two iPhone 3G (no 3GS) with the 6.15 baseband and jailbroken with Redsnow and unlocked with Ultrasnow, no problems. I'm starting to think it is a hardware problem, but that the problem was already there before upgrading the baseband.
So if it's hardware, nothing I can do, I'll just sell it for parts, unless I can find a cheap 3GS on eBay with a broken screen.
I'll try removing the battery and see if that resets the controller (or whatever it's called), and then stick in a new battery. Not much to lose.
