Report Time!
So, it all went pretty damn well, considering. I got 06.15.00 BB on there with redsn0w, had some problems locking up on the apple screen afterwards. Wasn't able to put the custom firmware on there via DFU mode as I was getting error 1600 from itunes. Put it in restore mode (holding down the home key while plugging in, letting go of home once the itunes logo came up on the iphone) and loaded the custom firmware - that worked!
I left my old and expired AT&T chip in there most of the time. Said "waiting for activation" alot. Once I installed ultrasn0w, I popped my local Panama carrier's SIM in and, voila! Worked just fine with a custom IPSW without Hacktivation necessary. I assume that PUSH messages and the like will all come through ok?
Seems that the only GPS data I'm getting is via the cell network - I don't get a fix if I take the SIM out (I do get one with the SIM inserted). So, I figure my GPS is kaput. Oh well.
Thanks to everyone here who helped out in the process!

Hi again folks,
So, when I built the IPSW, I checked the Multitask checkbox. I'm on a 3G, and it seems pretty slow in general. I'm thinking it might be because I'm loading it down with the multitasking, and perhaps I should only selectively multitask with backgrounder. Is there a way to turn off native multitasking, or would I have to flash it with a new custom IPSW without multitasking?
thanks!

Springtomize (a paid Cydia app) has an option to enable/disable multi-tasking
