what is the newest FW I can unlock without upgrading to iPad baseband??

I have a 3GS with 05.12.01 on 3.1.3 and new bootrom, I want to upgrade it to the latest FW without having to update to the iPad baseband, is it 4.0.2?

i cant upgrade and preserve the baseband like with i4 right?

Yes. you can use PwnageTool for Mac.
Select Expert mode, phone, firmware, check activation if you don't have an official SIM and follow the remaining steps all the way to the end (including the pwned-DFU countdown timer). Then continue w/iTunes (shift/click/select cfw). Done.

BTW: The latest version you could load is 4.3.3 .. but most agree 4.2.1 is the best overall iOS to load.
