Hi I am trying to unlock an iPhone 3G, I just bought it and it was on the iTunes screen. I plugged it into iTunes and it said "It needs a valid SIM card" so i figured why not just do a custom restore and then ill have it up on the main screen.
I have no idea what firmware it currently has or what baseband it currently has, I need to use a custom firmware to get inside to check that out.
But my problem now is I can't even do that, every custom restore i try to do I get Error 1600. i used iReb a million billion times and it still does not work I still get the Error 1600 when I try using custom firmware for 4.1 and 4.0. I have tried multiple ones! Then I tried custom firmware 3.1.3 and then i got Error 1601 How do I get rid of these errors? I have read everywhere that iReb should fix it but it is not helping me..
And no my Itunes is not corrupt because I have another iPhone 3GS that I have unlocked using the same process and iTunes works just fine
Ohh and then I just tried 4.1 again and i got Error 1602 lol. So ive had 1600,1601,1602 so far
Is it possible that I was sold a broken iPhone?

Yepp. I have T-Mobile so maybe that's why it's not liking my SIM Card when I plug it into iTunes. But I have done it before a million times and never had problems
Looks like my baseband is 05.15.04, Bootloader: 6.4_M3S2. Model MB702
Firmware: 4.2.1
Jailbreakable: YES
Unloackable: Upgrade to iPad BB.
So now my next question is, how do I update the baseband for an iPhone 3G? I have done it before using sn0wbreeze, a checkbox comes up asking me if I would like to update the baseband, but I am not getting that message with my 3G :/ ?

Use redsnow 0.9.6rc8 (recommended) or you can even use the latest redsnow 0.9.6rc19 and point it to a regular 4.2.1 firmware. That can jailbreak, activate and update to the ipad baseband for you (if you use the latest redsnow do not choose to install cydia and ipad baseband at the same time, do them two seperate times).
Be aware that updating to the ipad baseband is a one way street and it will break GPS.
Yeah I understand consequences of updating to 06.15.00, I have done it before. One last question though, I am still stuck in the Emergency Call screen. Is it okay to use redsn0w even though its on that screen, when I am done jailbreaking through redsn0w will I go back to the HOME screen or back to emergency call screen? Otherwise do I just need to use an ATT sim card temporarily to get out of that screen?
It is best to use a ATT sim card to get past that screen if you have access to one. If you dont redsnow will get you past that screen too by hactivating the phone. The consequence of that though is that your push notifications will not work which could lead to excessive battery drain (that can be fixed with SAM though).
Worked like a charm thanks a lot! Now should I always use redsnow 0.9.6rc8 whenever I am updating the baseband? Or was that only for the iPhone 3G?
Also my friend was wondering if he is able to unlock his iPhone 4, he has Modem Firmware: 02.10.04 Version: 4.1 (8B117). I have unlocked iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS, but never the iPhone 4 so I do not want to attempt unless I am for sure. I see that his baseband is not supported, so if I updated it to 06.15.00 would that work? And is that the only route? Thanks!
redsnow 0.9.6rc8 is best for iPhone 3G. For iPhone 3GS use the latest 0.9.6rc19.
For iPhone 4 a gevey sim is the only way to unlock that at the moment. 6.15 baseband will not work on that and could brick the phone if you try to install it on it.
