Unsuccessful Unlock/Jailbreak
Hi everyone,
A friend gave me his friends GF iPhone 1(Fig 1) that she bought on US eBay for her in Australia. I have tried numerous ways to Unlock and Activate it. It show the activate iPhone image(Fig 2). I tried:
- iTunes -
- PwnageTool - "wrong firmware bundle" which do I use?
- QuickPWN - Doesn't auto-find phone
- BlackRa1n - Can't remember why it doesnt work
- iActivate - "Activation failed with code -402653183." and dont know what to get firmware for
- One of the ~sn0w's

1G, as in 1st Generation, is often called 2G, but that refers to its mobile data speed because it supports EDGE which is 2nd generation mobile data speed. It's confusing, but when people say 2G, they're referring to the original, 1st gen iPhone.
Anyway, you can't activate the original iPhone with an un-activated AT&T SIM like you can on newer ones. It can only activate with an active AT&T SIM with iPhone data plan, so this phone will need to be hactivated.
Sounds like you are using a Mac since you mention PwnageTool as an option. You will need PwnageTool 3.xx, as 4.xx is too new. 3.08 sounds familiar. You can then use PwnageTool to make a custom unlocked and activated IPSW firmware that you flash to the phone and you'll be all set.

The last original iphone I unlocked I did by updating to 3.1.3, then put in an AT&T SIM. Itunes should recognize the iphone with the AT&T SIM. This gets you past the connect to Itunes screen. You then will have to JB and unlock.
Here is a link to how to use Redsnow to JB:

Here is a link to how to unlock with Pwnage Tool:

I just did one a couple of months ago for a friend. I use T-mobile and have some old AT&T SIM's I use that are not active. I'm pretty sure that I only used one of those cards to get past the connect to Itunes screen.

RE
No, I was planning on getting an un-activated AT&T Sim on ebay(I live in australia, Vodaphone Sim didn't work) and activating it. I tried PwnageTool but it says wrong firmware bundle even though when I selected 3.1(2G) (it couldn't find one and gave option to search web, which it searched for 3.1)

trying to activate an iPhone 2G/1G with an inactive AT&T SIM isn't possible.. The older iPhones require a Social Security number to be entered in iTunes activate. If you do need to activate it the only way would be with a custom firmware.

Restore your 2g iphone to the latest which is 3.1.3 and jailbreak it with redsn0w 0.9.4 but browse to stock 3.1.2, you need to download BL 3.9 and 4.6 to unlock. This redsn0w will activate, jailbreak and unlock all in one process. Custom firmware is not for 2g iphone.
