You can jailbreak it with jailbreakme.com or redsnow 0.9.4 and you can unlock with ultrasnow from cydia. Do not update to 4.1 or 4.2.1 or you will lose the ability to unlock.

so I t go into cydia from my phone and use ultrasnow and that's it?

Is it supposed to take a long time to reboot after installing ultrasnow?

Just do a hard reset to reboot it. If cydia ever gives you the reboot/respring button dont press it, just manually turn the phone off and back on.
