Who can IMEI unlock iphone 4, apple or carrier

HI All

I had a very interesting experience today. I own an AT&T iphone 4which currently can only be unlocked using IMEI unlock or sim interposer. However, I also have a mobile phone account in Singapore, which sells unlocked iphones. So, I asked my carrier in SG if they could unlock my phone..and was told that "no, you have to contact Apple here in Singapore". So, i called Apple in SG about this telling them that I had an iphone 4, that I didn't know the carrier cause I bought it from a non-mobile phone vendor, that I had a SG mobile number, had broken my other phone and could not use the iphone 4 because it was locked.

Well, bottom line was, had to give them the serial number off my phone, of course, it showed up at an AT&T phone and was told "Apple doesn't do the IMEI unlocks...the carrier has to unlock the phone we just provide the final whitelist that they add to".

Now, I bring this up because its interesting and because I had read on some forum someone who said they 'tricked" apple into unlcoking their phone...not sure about that.

I suspect if I bring the phone into the SG carrier when I am there, they may unlock it for me...or maybe not...but seems they won't do it remotely

AT&T submits a request to Apple's database and then your phone will be unlocked when you connect to iTunes.

However, AT&T never unlocks their iPhones.

EDIT: The trick you are referring to is done by user, UnlockPro. Not sure if it works. He charges $50 and only does 3 per day. Ask user Scmed27 in a few days to see if it works.
