Is there any way to unlock an iPhone 4 running 4.2.1 with baseband 3.10.01? If not, will I be able to unlock it if I upgrade the firmware and/or the baseband?

No, there isn't a software exploit way of doing it. You can either go with Gevey Sim, or pay for IMEI unlock, or perhaps your carrier would be nice enough to unlock it for you.
