Mashi: I was in a similar situation. If this pans out, I'll let everyone know the route I took. If not, well one can always buy a factory unlocked iPhone and sell the AT&T-locked one.

ModMyI: I was wondering if i can speak to "FAY" ?
Annabel: I'm sorry but he's not available on shift at the moment.
Annabel: I've taken your request to unlock the phone and see that you've been on chat with my colleagues.
Annabel: Can I have the IMEI number of your phone?
ModMyI: (*IMEI EDITED*)
Annabel: I've forwarded the request to unlock the phone.
Annabel: Is there anything else I can help you with?
ModMyI: How long till its unlocked?
Annabel: It'll take upto seven working days.
ModMyI: ohh ok, thank you very much.
Annabel: You're welcome.
Annabel: Have a nice day and enjoy your weekend.
ModMyI: Same to you!
Annabel: Bye and take care.
I HOPE THIS WORKS!!!!!!!!
P.S. One thing i noticed is all Customer Rep's are saying it will take 7 days to unlock... Not 24 hours etc.AT&T iPhone 4 Officially Unlocked

it wont work. after the request is made by the operator (in this case o2) apple check the IMEI against their DB and see that it's locked to other network and won't unlock it. been there done that
good luck bros

Monnhit: the scenario you describe is certainly plausible and could be squared with earlier successes if one assumes that Apple has increased scrutiny of carrier-submitted IMEIs in the wake of the unauthorized entry of AT&T IMEIs in the database last month.
That said, I can't help but hope that my unlock will be processed... Else I'll need to do something drastic to keep me from buying an unlocked iPhone mere months before the release of the fifth gen iPhone.
