I just moved to Italy with the US Military, and wanted to use my phone down here with the local phone service (Wind, Vodafone, etc).
I'm a bit older and thus not in tune with jailbreaking/unlocking, etc. Reading the boards has helped a lot.
My question is, can I install any software on my iphone to make it work in Italy? I just did a brand new restore hoping that it would work down here (via the apple software, by holding down the home and power button), but now it only displays "No Sim card installed". Insert a Valid Sim card with no pin lock to activate Iphone.".
I try putting in my Vodafone card that I purchased over here, but then the message reads something like "unsupported carrier, etc. emergency calls only". I can't even get into my iphone anymore.
I've run forecast program, and this is what is says about my iphone:
BASEBAND: 05.15.04
MODEL: MB702
JAILBREAKABLE: YES (ALWAYS)
UNLOCKABLE: NO
THETHERED: NO
The back of the iphone reads Model number A1241 (8GB).
Right now the Iphone isn't doing me any good over here in Italy.
Ain't no way that AT&T would unlock your phone, I got my 3GS from a DoD member somewhere in the Med, for €80, 'cause all he could do was to use it as an ipod. He bought a white iphone 4, 32GB localy @ €779=$1,112.64, that's with today's xchange rate (the 16Gb sells for €659), UNLOCKED with 2 yr warranty. Now he is using it in Bahrain. Vodafone's (Verizon's) deal for 18mos is €449+18mosX€50, for the unlocked 4,32Gigs. Italy is a Wind country, check what deal Wind would offer u. The exchange rates back then were different, he ended up paying some €1000 and some change.
