Unlocking a 3g

I am wanting to Jailbreak and unlock an iphone 3g version 4.2.1 with modem firmware 05.15.04

Can the phone be unlocked? If so how? (The easier the better)
Does it matter which one is done first jailbreak or unlocking?
I am new at this so any links or advice would be helpful.
I know the iphone hardware but very little about the software.

That baseband can't be unlocked.

Your only option is to upgrade to the iPad baseband of 6.15.00 which breaks your GPS. but if you're willing to sacrifice that, let me know and I can assist you on upgrading your baseband to unlock.

Edit: I see you have an iPhone 3G. We can check the bootloader version to see if you can downgrade the baseband to an unlockable state. That way we can avoid upgrading the baseband. However, if you don't have the bootloader we are looking for, then it's back to upgrading to the iPad baseband.

Download f0recast from ih8sn0w.com to see if you have bootloader 5.8. If not, you cannot downgrade the baseband.

Thanks, I downloaded f0recast and it showed that I do not have bootloader 5.8. So I guess I won't be unlocking this phone. Do you know if I can jailbreak it with Greenpoison or do I have to use redsnow?

You are on 4.2.1 firmware, you can jailbreak with Greenpois0n, but I'm sure that i.Annie will say that you should use redsn0w because Greenpois0n doesn't work well with iPhone 3G.

Lol you have it correct iGoof. On an iPhone 3G typically you use redsn0w. GP generally doesn't work and I haven't seen it work on a 3G yet, but it wouldn't hurt to try if you're curious.

Annie - is Redsn0w always the best for 3G. Is it better than Pwnage? If I have already used Pwnage and am looking to upgrade from 3.1 to 4.xx should I use Redsn0w or continue to use Pwnage.
