How can I tell if I have unlocked?

Hi , I have Iphone 3GS 4.01.
Yesterday I have Jailbreaked and unlocked the phone from jailbreakme.com and ultrasnow.Now I've put my sim card from another phone that does not have any data plan into the unlocked iphone
however when I have logged into my account today, I see that ATT shows my devide as iphone 3GS, now iam afraid that att is gonna charge me for the data plan, what and where did I do wrong?
My purpose is to use Iphone 3GS without data plan.

At&t knows that you have an iPhone and will add the data plan to your account automatically.
