This all began when my wife’s sister gave her an old 2g iPhone. I was hoping to unlock the iPhone so my wife could make calls on a prepaid card, since she is at home and near wireless most of the time and rarely needs the cellular function.
So I was trying to unlock my wife’s 2g iPhone (3.1.3) with RedSn0W for Windows. Everything went fine through the restore back to 3.1.2. But then iPhone (or iTunes, I can’t remember) started demanding a SIM that the phone didn’t have. Now I am unable to go to the next phase of the unlock process. And I’m stuck with a phone that won’t even let me use it as a iPod (which we were doing before).
Can anyone tell me how to salvage this operation either by (1) making the iPhone usable as an iPod without a SIM or (2) telling me how to unlock a 2g iphone (now on 3.1.2, I presume) that does not have an activated SIM?
Now that I'm at 3.1.2, how do I do step 1 which requires me to enter iTunes (which I can't do without activation).
FROM INSTRUCTIONS:
Step 1: Update to original iPhone 3.1.3 firmware via iTunes. Downloading and installation instructions for iPhone 3.1.3 firmware can be found from here.
I ended up taking the prepaid sim and putting it my unlocked 3G. Worked fine. Then I had ATT activate the 2g for me. So, switched phones and my wife has a prepaid iPhone (talk only) and I have unlimited data on a 2g for $20.00 which I'm told can be grandfathered when I upgrade (probably in June).
By the way, is there a glossary on this site for newbies like me. I have a vague notion as to what DFU or recovery mode is, but not enough to do it.
