    Default unlock after restore?

Hello, I bought a used iphone 3gs from someone and it came locked to rogers in Canada. When i turned it on, it had already been restored fully. Now it wants me to insert a sim and connect it to itunes, but this clearly doesn't work since it is not the original sim card.

Is there any hope for my situation? How can I unlock it and use my sim in this phone?

Thanks and sorry for asking a question that has probably been asked a hundred times.

So I guess you are not on Rogers then right? Download f0recast to see what firmware it is on and what baseband it has.

    no, i'm not with rogers.

    here's what it says:

    baseband: 5.15.04

    firmware: 4.2.1

    is this really unlockable?

You can unlock that, but only if you install the iPad baseband on it (which will break gps).

there seems to be lots of info on the net for unlocking iphones with the same baseband and firmware.

but this program says it is unlockable.

    which is true?
    can i unlock my phone?

meaning i won't be able to use any apps that use gps on the phone, is that correct?

Google maps will still work as that uses cellular and wifi triangulation. But anything that uses the true gps like Tom Tom will not work.

Download stock 4.2.1 ipsw from Downloads section here on MMi

Download redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 (Google or dev team's blog)

Run redsn0w, browse to stock 4.2.1, select "Cydia" and "Install iPad Baseband" and follow on-screen prompts.

Be sure you have the latest iTunes installed.

And then go to Cydia to install Ultrasn0w to unlock

    thank you very much!

i downloaded the 'iPad1_1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw' file and used redsn0w. but 'install ipad baseband' is not an option. my only options are: 1. Install Cydia, 2. install custom bundle, 3. just boot tethered right now, and 4. just enter pnwed DFU mode right now.

i must have made some stupid mistake. can you help me out again? thanks

also at the top it says 'custom logos are not yet available for this device'.

did i download the wrong .ipsw file? i downloaded the ipad 4.2.1 from the firmware sub-section in Downloads.

You need the firmware for your device. Not the firmware for the iPad.

You should use the iPhone firmware for redsn0w, it doesn't require any iPad Baseband files, because it retrieves them from the web.

ok, i really don't want to ask this question, but i have to. Since the phone has been restored and i dont have the original sim, I can't access the settings or anything. therefore i have no idea if this is a 3g or 3gs. is there any definite way to tell. it says 3g 16gb on the back.

i need to know this so i can download the correct firmware.

You need to restore to a custom firmware that doesn't have the iPad baseband packaged.

ok, so it's jailbroken and unlocked. My sim works in this phone now.

Is this phone unlocked to the point where I could just remove my sim, and insert another sim from a different provider and it work immediately? Or if I wanted to switch sims, I would need to do something else? Would I need itunes to use another sim?

    thanks

Now that it is unlocked already, you can freely use any SIM in it without any other items such as iTunes. Simply remove the current SIM and put in another.
