Default unlocking my 3gs, stuck on itunes screen

I'm trying to do my friend a favor and unlock an iphone 3gs so he can use it overseas but the problem is it is stuck on the "connect to itunes with the sliding bar at the bottom that allows for emergency calls. I tried blackrain, limerain and greenpoison. I know greenpoison installed because now when i boot it up, it shows the skull on the apple logo but it still boots to the itunes connect screen. itunes only lets me restore and update the phone (which i dont want to do because theres no unlock for 4.3). I'm not evne sure what version this phone is either. Anyone got any ideas on how to get this phone working? Does it have anything to do with the sim card?

I don't wanna have to pay some guy $40.00 to do it for me when I should be able to do it myself. Thank for you help!

That is the Activtion screen meaning you need to activate the iPhone with an official AT&T Sim card, if you don't have an AT&T sim card you can use Redsn0w to hacktivate it.

Alright well to unlock that iPhone you would need to update the baseband to iPad Baseband using Redsn0w, but install the iPad Baseband disables your GPS and is known to drain your battery faster.

You need to download the latest version of redsn0w and the 4.2.1 firmware then Redsn0w and select install Cydia and also select Install iPad Baseband. Then follow the steps and you should be good

Yes you can update to 4.3 and then install the iPad Baseband. The unlock should still work.

I just used tiny umbrella and found out that i still have the shsh's for 4.1. if i downgrade to 4.1, would that help make unlocking easier at all? or would that not affect the baseband at all? i know it would be much easier to unlock if it were on 4.1 firmware and baseband.

so would it work to downgrade to 4.1 and it would downgrade the baseband as well with tinyumbrella?

There isn't a way to downgrade Baseband, your Baseband will stay the same.
