Default Activate old 3g on At&t

I have an old 3G on 4.2.1 and an active AT&T sim card with data plan from another phone. I cannot figure out how to activate the sim in the iPhone. iTunes wants to restore the phone when connected. It is jailbroken with the latest redsnow.

    Any help is appreciated.

Put the sim card in the iPhone. Are you at the emergency call screen or recovery mode?

The phone is working. It is jailbroken and I have access to the app store and cydia, but I can't make calls. it just keeps telling me the call failed. Also when I plug it in, iTunes wants to restore it.

If you're already at the home screen, you should just be able to insert the sim card and receive service. Are you getting any signal?

its showing one bar, which is odd, because we have an AT&T microcell here in the next room.

Does the phone line have access granted to the microcell?

its showing one bar, but if I turn off wifi, Safari will not access webpages and telephone calls always fail.

Although the sim is in and active (works on another AT&T phone) it is as if the iPhone will not utilize it.

    could it connect before jailbreak?
if it did restore it back to stock firmware and re-jailbreak.
    it's your best option

I didn't have the sim card before I jailbroke it. I guess I can restore back to original and try that.

^ was just about to say that. You can shift + restore to stock 3.1.3 and re-jailbreak with jailbreakme.com in safari.

I don't have any shsh blobs saved for this phone. I am doing this for a friend and really just thought it was going to be a simple job. Can I go back to 3.1.3 without blobs?

Restored to 4.2.1 and phone is now working, but when trying to use data, an error is returned that states " data service is not subscribed" or something to that effect. I suppose she'll have to go in and upgrade her data plan.

Yeah, update your data plan. You should be able to use redsn0w on it now and jailbreak it. The 3G jailbreak can be the easiest, good luck
