What to do now? Just got a iphone 4
Hi, i just recently purchased a iphone 4, i havent received it yet but its on its way. I've been using the 3g and now jumping to the 4. The i4 is on ios 4.0 and i do plan on unlocking it. So my question is, do i unlock it first then sync it to my itunes? or do i sync it first then unlock it? either way it won't update the phone right?
And is there any way of completely erasing everything on the phone with preserving the version and bb?
Thanks

There's a lot of things you need to learn

Firstly, an unlock requires you to jailbreak.
Secondly, if you need to restore the device to erase any information, you must have SHSHs saved. At this point, it is unclear if 4.2.1 is still being signed so you might be able to restore to 4.2.1 without SHSHs.
Who knows when Apple will stop signing it tho, but if they do stop you can't restore to anything but 4.3 and can't jb that officially yet nor preserve the bb to unlock.
If the device has SHSHs at all like for 4.0.1 or 4.1 you can safely restore. You can even preserve the baseband just by running TinyUmbrella's TSS Server while restoring so that's no problem.
Syncing you can do anytime. It won't make you upgrade if you don't allow it to. Whether you wanna sync before jailbreak or sync after jailbreak or restore, it's fine. Just don't click ok when it prompts you to update, which it will prompt you.

...well it doesn't matter. As long as it's after you restore if you have to restore first.

First things first, you want to get TinyUmbrella and save your SHSH blobs. Lots of guides to do that. From now on, you want to have TinyUmbella's TSS server running anytime you're restoring to 4.1+ to preserve the unlockable 1.59.00 baseband.
I can confirm that 4.2.1 + the 1.59.00 baseband works.

It doesn't matter which order. After you restore, you can either sync first and jailbreak or jailbreak then sync.
If you can't activate the phone after restoring because you don't have an official SIM, then you'd want to jb first to even get to sync. If you have a SIM you can do it either way.

Syncing does not update the ios version or baseband so it doesn't really matter if you sync before or after you jailbreak/unlock.
