unlocking 3gs to 4.2.1 bb5.15 question

hello besides gps problems will this brick my phone in any way if i do this? i am doing it for a friend that just wanted to use it under a different servce thats all he cares about. will i be able to do it?

You can do it, I have before. Aside from the obvious loss of GPS(however iAnnie said that garmin will work), it won't brick the iPhone. Heres a guide you can follow How to Update & Jailbreak iPhone 3GS / 3G Baseband to 06.15.00 with Redsn0w 0.9.6b5 for iOS 4.2.1 Unlock | Redmond Pie

Inserting a SIM would be the best way.

^ Yes but he wants to unlock, but 5.15bb cannot be unlocked and 6.15bb can be unlocked.

Update your BB to iPad Baseband.

Yep, Google Maps and Garmin use EDGE/3G so that'll be fine. No TomTom or Navigon.

After you follow iPittsburg's link to that guide, go to greenpois0n.com and download greenpois0n to untether your phone (if it is tethered after redsn0w).

ok i tried using redsnow to unlock but i was stuck at waiting for reboot screen. what can i do now? i have it basck to factory settings. i restored it back to 4.2 not the newer version thats out now.

i keep getting stuck on waiting for reboot. and have to keep restoring phone. also i keep getting this screen when i pick my restore ipws in redsnow asking me its it a newer version bootrom how come no video shows that i keep hitting no.

Just to make sure you've got everything right, use redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 and stock 4.2.1 ipsw. Make sure your phone is actually on 4.2.1. Use f0recast if you can't see via Settings.

Then try again. You can try opening redsn0w, then open task manager and find redsn0w in there, right click and set affinity. Then uncheck CPU0. then continue to use redsn0w as normal.

ok i will try that now. do all redsnows come up with the saying " is this a newer model 3gs?....

i just tried it again two more times and it still gets stuck on waiting for reboot. i got forcaste and it says its no unlockible (thas cause the bb is 5.15) is that correct? idk what i am doing wrong. after i hit cancel on redsnow its like the phone is not even being processed because i hold down power and home for a few mins then i see the apple sign come on and it goes into the menu saying the usb cord and saying plug into itunes when i do that it says there is no sim card installed in the phone you are attempting to activate. what am i doing wrong? need more information please

Hm. Well try a custom firmware made by pwnagetool. If you don't have a Mac, find one on Google bc we can't distribute or link custom firmwares.

You might have better luck with the custom firmware just be sure it includes the iPad baseband. Use redsn0w to put it in DFU mode only before restoring to the custom fw, do not select Cydia or the iPad baseband in redsn0w. Just DFU only.

Keep trying with redsn0w 0.9.6rc8, it has taken me a couple of times before, do you get to the running pineapple screen on the iphone screen?

i might go see if i can pay for an unlock. i dont get any running pineapple notthing at all i get a blank screen.

Keep trying with redsn0w, it will work. I've used it many times. Why pay for it when you can do it for free.

it still didn't work. man idk whats wrong with this.... its like it just stops runnig cause i dont even have to do a restore through i tunes. i dotn see anything no pineapple. if my serial number is 87847 would this be a newer model 3gs or a older model 3gs i piked both and it still dont work.

this is BS man i am trying everything it just stops at waiting for reboot i am gonna have to pay to jailbreak and unlock this is f up. idk whats with this phone i did this so many times.
