Default Custom Firmware vs other JBs (rsnow/limerain etc)

First off thanks to Dev team and all who work on the JB's & Unlocks. Also sorry if this has been covered in the past but I had a simple question.

What are the advantages vs disadvantages to using Pwnage vs Redsnow vs Limerain vs GreenPois0n vs Spirit.

I believe that Pwnage is a custom firmware that maintains the baseband but can be buggy? Can anyone clarify the advantages vs disadvantages of each. I have always used Pwnage.

Also - aside from the apple joy of having the newest software package and some of the bells and whistles does it pay to upgrade a firmware just to upgrade it. I'm on a 3G (will get 4G when 5G or 6G comes out) and am on 3.13. Does it make sense to upgrade. Also I am giving my wife's old 2G to my mother-in-law and upgrading her to a 3G bought from Craigslist that came locked with 5.14 or 5.15......should I upgrade the 2G to 4.0.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I have actually found pwnage tool to be the least buggy of all the jailbreak tools. Just a matter of preference really though.

You wont be able to update the 2G to 4.0, 3.1.3 is as high as they go.

When you want to start from scratch and jailbreak, I would use PwnageTool, it gives you more options. Thats why I like it.
