How to check what operator iPhone is locked on

I bought a used iphone4 from a local ad. The previous owner used it for months on ios4.1 , jailbroken and unlocked. After he updated to 4.2 he got stuck on baseband 3.10.01 and sold it to me real cheap because he couldn't unlock it and use it anymore. Is there any way to check which operator the phone is locked to ? (Without trying different sim cards) I don't feel like waiting forever for an unlock for this baseband. Thank you.

you can try calling apple and asking, they should be able to tell you
