Why is activation still required for iPhone 4 after update to 4.2.1 using TinyUmbrell

I have an iPhone 4, FW 4.0.1, baseband 01.59.00, already activated, JB and unlocked.

Then, I used TinyUmbrella to update to 4.2.1 without upgrading the baseband. When iTunes completed, I successully got the error 1013, and the phone went into recovery mode.

Then JB with Greenpois0n, the phone rebooted and iTunes shows the phone needs activation!

Does anyone knows where it went wrong? and is there any way to fix it or activate the phone?

Ok, I was convinced that redsn0w will not alter my baseband, so I went ahead and tried redsn0w. But when running redsn0w 0.9.6rc8, it crashed after reboot at "uploading the ramdisk" stage!

I tried many times, even with older version of redsn0w and also tried running in XP compatible mode, but same thing happens.

Anyone has any idea what happened here?

Any redsn0w that can install cydia on a iPhone 4 4.2.1 is fine. Just use any.

If all else fails, just make a custom ipsw with sn0wbreeze 2.2.

It hacktivates, and keeps your bb.

I was in the same situation not even two days ago. I HIGHLY recommend using a custom firmware to activate. It took a few hours downloading the files I needed and minutes later, iPhone was fully activated on 4.2.1 while preserving my baseband for the unlock.

So I used redsn0w and the phone was activated, cydia added, unlocked with ultrasn0w 1.2.

But something very very strange happens, the phone is unlocked alright, I can use my carrier to make calls, internet connection with 3G, but I can not make Internet Tethering.

There is no "Cellular Data Network" in "Network" menu for APN setup! Something even more interesting is that in the "About", the Network indicates the correct network I'm using, while the "Carrier" states "AT&T 9.0", but I'm not using AT&T!
