So the home button on my old iPhone 3G recently died on me and I decided to jailbreak in order to use sbsettings to replace it, problem was I already had 4.2.1 and baseband 5.15.04
Using tinyumbrella I managed to revert back to 4.0.1 and I jailbroke using jailbreakme.com. I installed sbsettings and everything is fine (although I noticed it doesn't work when in the cydia app for some reason ). I now need to use this phone for tmobile and so, stupidly, I did quick quick research and simply went into cydia and installed ultrasn0w...with my 5.15.04 baseband
Even though it said it completed, the phone is now constantly "searching" for a network, even a working AT&T sim doesn't work. Seems like I can't do anything with a network now only with wifi. Can anyone At all help me with this?
^ would I need to upgrade back to 4.2.1 in order to change the baseband?
I'm hoping that GPS will remain usable after this change, though...Would really be unfortunate to have a crippled phone like that. But, it's either this or buy a new one, and being a college student doesn't help with the latter option
Alex1015, I did read that post before I put mine up, actually, but since I am completely new to this, and did not see anything about my particular configuration (3g with 4.0.1 and 15.15.04) then I wasn't sure if things would be different
You can change the baseband regardless of which firmware you are at. The maps app will work but a true gps will not. How often are you using an actual gps app like motionx or tomtom? The only thing that matters when unlocking is the baseband, and yours is as you said 5.15.04. Different firmware decides what jailbreaking tool you will need.
Oh I see, thank you for the quick response, iPittsburgh. I actually never use those apps, only the main maps app, but I do on occasion leave it to track me and watch my location move within the app for when I feel I'm lost in a new area and want to make sure I'm heading in the right direction. I would not be able to do this, correct?
Considering your home button is broken, it'll be impossible for you to use redsn0w to jb/upgrade baseband. You also need to be on at least 4.1 to use the iPad baseband bc that's the version redsn0w starts at with the upgrade option.
Even with a custom fw with the iPad baseband, you still need to set into pwned dfu mode to restore to. So I don't know how you're going to incorporate the upgrade of the baseband without a home button.
