I have just jailbroken my daughters phone for her with redsn0w. Shes now given it to her sister who wants it unlocked. As unlocking wasn't an issue when I jailbroke it I never bothered about it.

Is it now not possible to unlock it?

Does she need it to be unlocked? If so you can use redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 to install iPad baseband, then open cydia and install unltrasn0w 1.2 to unlock.

I would restore it and setup as a new phone before jailbreaking and unlocking so that you're starting with a clean slate.
