I've been using an unlocked Softbank (Japan) iPhone 3G in other countries, and it works just the same.

I have an iPhone 4 on BB 03.10.01 but since it can't be unlocked yet, I can't tell you for sure.

idk if this was ur quetion, but i have a iphone that i got from japan and on the softbank carrier, and it works perfectly in the US.
I can even go on verison's network with the softbank sim card. So i guess the japanese iphones can go on any carriers network with the softbank sim card?(at&t, tmobile, etc.)
