Restore to custom firmware 4.2.1 3gs

Hello, i have an oldbootrom 3gs on 05.11.07 on iOS 3.1.2 and i wanna restore it to 4.2.1. I have windows but i manged to get a custom firmware made with pwnagetool from a friend. So now should i run redsn0w and DFU mode and then restore with itumes or can i restore directly via itunes(shift+restore). Thanks

You need to use redsn0w to put the phone in pwned DFU mode. If you just restore with Itunes you will get an error.

You will also find after the restore that the phone is not jailbroken you will need to run Redsn0w again to jailbreak it and install Cydia.

Things to watch out for.

Make sure when you shift restore you select the custom firmware and not the original. I know it sounds obvious but it is the most frequent mistake made with this tool.

Make sure you do not select ipad baseband.

If you have an original carrier SIM then put it in the phone when restoring to prevent hactivation.

Yes, redsnow will hactivate it for you if needed.

redsn0w is not recognizing the custom firmware made with pwnagetool, it is only recognizing the official 4.2.1 restore.

You dont use custom firmware with redsnow, only official.

i restored to custom firmware succesfully with itunes and now the iphone is showing apple logo..what do i have to do?

It is just stuck on the apple logo? Are you sure you have old bootrom?

but itunes mentionned that the iphone restored succesfully..

You restored to a custom 4.2.1 right? You didnt have tiny umbrella running when you did this did you?

when redsn0w indicated that iphone is in dfu mode i opened itunes and restored but i didn't press the finish button in redsn0w.. could it be the problem?

You may have a bad custom firmware then.

Did you make the custom or download it from a site?

i made it on my friend's imac using pwnagetool 4.1.2

I think you need to use pwnage tool 4.1.3 to make it.
