3GS BB 4.26.08 + iOS 4.2.1

Hi all,

What is my best move on this?
Got an (old bootrom) 3GS that is unlockable with BB 4.26.08.
I'm considering using a custom ipsw that preserves the BB (4.26.08) and upgrade the iOS. (once a pwnagetool for 3GS is released for 4.2.1)

I'm also considering on upgrading BB to the latest ultrasn0w unlockable BB 5.13.04 and then upgrade with custom ipsw to 4.2.1.

So what should I decide? Maybe even BB 5.11 or 5.12?
Are there any performance based differences in BB versions beside the patches by Apple to prevent unlocking?

Is there any version history for BB versions? (I know for the iOS version history on wikipedia but there's nothing on BB)

Do you have SHSH saved for previous versions of IOS. The newest baseband that can be unlocked is 5.13 and that was available with IOS 4.0.1 and IOS 4.0.2

Baseband 5.14 came with ios 4.1 and baseband 5.15 came with 5.2.1.

Quite honestly there is no benefit to updating your baseband from where it is.
You can use pwnage tool to get to 4.1 and keep the existing baseband assuming you have SHSH saved for 4.1.

If you have no SHSH you can go to an untether jailbreak on 4.2.1 and keep the baseband but it is a lot more complicated.

To do this you would have to modify pwnage tool by dropping a 4.2.1 bundle in it to recognize the 4.2.1 ipsw and create the custom firmware. After restoring to the custom firmware you have to jailbreak with redsn0w because the custom firmware created with 4.2.1 is not already jailbroken.

I'm asking because i'm skeptic how such an old BB works together with current OS software...both performance and stability wise.

Yes, got SHSH for all versions starting from 3.1.
Yes i'm aware of the more complicated procedure to get pwnagetool work the 4.2.1 3GS ipsw. I'm waiting for a final version of pwnagetool for 4.2.1...

I have same phone and running 4.1 with 5.13. Also waiting on new pwnage. Many others are running 4.1 with 4.26

I too am in the same boat (old boot 3GS with iOS 4.0 and 5.12.1). Let's wait it out-- we have working, restorable, jailbreakable, unlockable phones. Why mess with it? I can't really see any added features in later firmwares that the jb community doesn't already provide.

Would anyone guide me on the possibility of upgrading my unlocked iPhone 3GS with 5.13.06 baseband? Is it possible right now or do we have to wait for an unlock? I'm currently running 4.0.

Totally new and still trying to understand how this works. I currently have it unlocked on my carrier (Costa Rica).

Wait for the new version of pwnage tool. You will be able to get to 4.2.1 and keep that 5.12 baseband. Only simple option now is to go to 4.1 but you must have shsh for 4.1

Heh in the end installed OSX in vmware and modified the pwnagetool 4.1.3 with an unofficial bundle to accept 4.2.1, and cooked my own ipsw.

Here's the result:

Hi, I have iphone 3G running OS 3.0.1 with baseband 4.26.08 jailbroken and unlocked and working nicely. I am not excited to upgrade to OS4.x (especially because Cycorder doesn't work on it yet), BUT newer apps are 4.0 only, so I am starting to be limited. Specifically I need SmartMaps for Sydney. The only offline streetmap for Sydney that is 3.x is awful. Or is there a repository of old apple aps somewhere? I contacted the SmartMaps developer and they said applestore requires only the lastest version of the app to be available.

So, I am reluctantly considering an upgrade...

I understand from this thread that old baseband is not a problem for OS4.x. What I don't understand is how do I save out that baseband and integrate it into the custom ipsw when I'm using pwnage? According to the following post, 3G doesn't use SHSH blobs until 4.0: [How-To] Using tiny umbrella to update/downgrade/restore. So what is it exactly that I'm looking for?

Yes I've used tiny umbrella to save my shsh anyway (but only recently, so the "signature" is for 4.0 etc.). Yes, I think I did "make my life easier" with Cydia long ago, but how does pwnage access that? I have looked in Library/iTunes/iPhone/ and there is no backup. (I've looked in my backup files from old computer and it wasn't there either... Yes I clicked "show hidden files")

Would love advice/guides... And what about 4.1.0 v. 4.2.1?
