    Default Weird Unlocking Issue

Ok guys this one has me stumped...

My friend has an iPhone 3GS 8GB locked to Vodafone Ireland.

    Now, he's on 4.1...

I jailbroke it on Saturday 29th, and unlocked it with Ultrasn0w via Cydia, popped in his o2 Ireland sim and voilą! It worked..

    until he went to work...

He works in Northern Ireland so his carrier changed to o2 UK.

Then his battery went dead so when he arrived home he charged it up, and the phone just said "searching..." for 2 hours!

He called me again, and took the phone to me.
I reinstalled Ultrasn0w, hard reset, sim out, sim in, reset network settings etc and NOTHING!

I checked his baseband and it's at 5.14.02

I'm 99% certain it was NOT this baseband on Saturday night!

Could o2 have auto updated his baseband?

    I'm seriously blank here!

That's odd, if nobody restored it or updated it, it shouldn't have any change. That baseband as you may now is not unlockable. I am thinking perhaps it was at that baseband already but it is a factory unlocked phone, or it is a phone that is locked to O2. Now, if you can figure out if either of those are true, that would help to determine if the lack of signal is just a simple fluke and a restore should fix it right up. You'll need SHSHs to restore to 4.1, but seeing as how you can clearly see the baseband is 5.14.02, you cannot unlock anyway unless you verify it is factory unlocked or locked to the carrier he uses.

Let's see...if you fail to find any way to force it to work again even after restoring, you'll just have to update the baseband to 6.15.00 to unlock then. Of course that includes the risk of losing GPS function and void of warranty (if applicable). That's something to think about though.

Honestly, I swear to god it's locked to Vodafone and it was functioning on o2 for two days before his battery ran out! And he didn't update as it's still 4.1!

It's the strangest thing I've ever seen!

It happened after a combo of roaming with o2-UK and the battery dying! I'm totally dumbfounded.... I run a repair store here and unlock phones day to day and I've never seen this!

so, I'll have to use custom firmware to change the baseband right?

No just download the 4.1 firmware for the phone and the ipad firmware and then use redsn0w rc8

Go up to 4.2.1 stock, so just hit upgrade in iTunes. The baseband for 4.1 and 4.2.1 is not unlockable anyway. Then you can just run redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 to upgrade the baseband and jb. Do you have SHSHs? If so then you can do what stray said.

Edit: if you don't have SHSHs for 4.1, just note 4.2.1 will be a tethered jb for that phone

Yeah I saved the SHSH blobs via Cydia! It's really bugging me because I don't understand how the baseband was updated without a updating the firmware.

So, is redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 available for windows also?

Thanks a lot for the reply, I really appreciate it!

Ok guys, I followed instructions and jailbroke/unlocked successfully!

Thanks so much for the heads up!

Still baffled as to how his baseband magically updated after 2 days...

oh, and despite the fact I hit "make my life easier" with Cydia, tiny umbrella said the SHSH blobs were not saved, so he's stuck tethered for the unforeseeable future!
