iPhone 2G -unlock unsuccessful- please advise ASAP!

I used Redsn0w 0.9.4 to jailbreak AND (supposedly, per youtube) UNLOCK my iPhone 2G 3.1.3 on firmware 4.05.4. The jailbreak went fine, but I just discovered it's not really unlocked. I have a new sim card and service ready and need to port my ph# quickly before my old carrier turns off service.

Please tell me what I need to download to complete the unlock. Thank you in advance.

PS. I'm also waiting for new unlocks for a 3G 4.2.1 on firmware 5.15.04 (also already jailbroken), but can wait on that as long as I get the 2G unlocked first

Go to Cydia and see if BootNeuter is installed

Redsn0w IS supposed to unlock as well as JB, right?

I also downloaded RS 0.9.6rc8 in prep for my 3G, but prefer not to upgrade the 3G to 6.15 - so should I try using the newer version of Redsn0w for the 2G ? or stick with the first version? Or something else entirely?

I'm opening Cydia now. Then search for Bootneuter? Or look under manage - packages?

Search for BootNeuter.

You can't use the newest redsn0w for the 2g.

If you're going to run redsn0w to unlock, it might cause problems. You can manually unlock the same way Redsn0w does. It uses bootneuter.

It should automatically set up your phone stats to it so just go with it.

I tried to run BootNeuter, but a message alert said Auto-lock is on and I should set it to Never. Then the phone froze and now it won't turn off!

OK, 5 minutes later, it's finally rebooting...

Do I need the new Sim card inserted while running BootNeuter? A message popped up saying no sim found and I clicked OK. Do I click on Flash to run BootNeuter? (Sorry I'm such a newbie to iPhone)

Also I don't know if Neuter and FakeBlank and Unlock should be on or off. Please let me know what to do next. Thank you!

Ok, I see you aren't online any more, i-Annie, so thank you VERY much for getting me going in the right direction!!! I'm very appreciative.

In the meantime, I looked on the web for the correct BootNeuter settings for a jailbroken unlocked iPhone. I set Auto-lock to never, turned off Wi-fi, turned on Airplane mode for 30 seconds (to assure no interruptions during flashing), then reopened BootNeuter and set it to 4.6, Neuter On, FakeBlank Off, Unlock On, and clicked Flash. Scary for a moment, but the bootloader and baseband were successfully flashed!

The process was quick and painless. The only snag was that BootNeuter made my phone freeze at the end (again) when it was checking for current settings. But researching on the net, I found that's typical. And now the job is done!

PS. I'm glad this issue is resolved and I've come this far, but I'm still not ready for activating new service yet--apparently the "Cellular Data Network" function is still missing, so I can't set up APN network. I'll post a new thread for that since it's another issue. THANKS!

Sorry I had class in the morning and had to sleep. I'm glad you got it working. As for your APN settings, I think installing a carrier bundle specific to your service provider will open cellular network for you.

No, my carrier (Simple Mobile) doesn't provide carrier bundles, and I was afraid to get one that was incompatible or unable to edit fully. But I was able to both enable Cellular Data Network for setting APN and then also MMS, steps listed for others at the thread:

It worked fine, and the phone is now fully jailbroiken and unlocked, and set correctly for Simple Mobile. BUT now I have a new problem that I'm really stumped with. I hope someone responds with a fast solution. Please see my newer thread:

URGENT: Can someone please help me ASAP? I thought my phone was successful unlocked cuz BootNeuter said the bootloader and baseband were successfully flashed. But if putting in my new sim card brings up an iTune restore prompt, then I'm guessing it's not truly unlocked afterall. Advise please! Thanks.

It's really hard to tell what the exact issue is. Have you tried to restore and do it all over again.

no, I'm trying to avoid a restore. I've downloaded programs after the jailbreak and I've done so many things--if it didn't work--I don't want to do the same thing. I only have a few days for the port of my old number to go through. So I'm running out of time before my old carrier shuts off, not to mention my time. I've put in two all nighters and too much of my workday time. Eeech! I'm thinking there has to be something I left out between the Redsn0w and the BootNeuter...?

Unfortunately, I can't pinpoint the issue as the problem youre having is too general. The easiest method is to wipe the phone clean by restoring. There is nothin left out between redsn0w and bootneuter. I've unlocked 3 iPhone 2g's the same way.

You could try uninstalling bootneuter and any Cydia packages that might be interfering, then reinstall bootneuter. That's the best I can say because usually after bootneuter, any SIM is supposed to work just fine.

I tried that with no luck. No matter what, Redsn0w hangs at the Waiting for Reboot stage. I couldn't even reinstall Cydia afterwards.

Now reluctantly, I have a restore in process and will be starting over clean. I'll check back later tonight. Thanks. Wish me luck . . .

Ok, I'm back later. After the restore, I tried a new jailbreak and unlock with Redsn0w 0.9.4 (which worked easily the first few times). It hung up at the waiting for reboot again, and no Cydia. I tried several times, still nothing. So I just went to jailbreakme.com and now I have Cydia again.

I just downloaded BootNeuter and ran it. It froze. I'm still trying to figure out what to do next.

Are you restoring from back up on your phone? If you are setting up as new should fix the problem.

Just making sure, but this is the 2g iPhone right? With the silver backing?

Hi. Thanks for the reply post. I restored as a new phone, so it was clean new files. After BootNeuter froze, I re-ran it, and it said: Nothing to Do, already at the correct settings. So I assumed it worked. When I turned the phone off, inserted the new sim card, and turned on the phone. It still went to the iTunes screen saying the sim was different and unrecognized. So it must not be unloacked yet, still!! I'm running out of time, and out of ideas! Feeling desperate! What's left to try?

PS. The night before I downloaded something from Cydia to enable MMS configuration, but didn't write it down. Now I can't find any that are compatible with 3.1.3. I don't know if that would make any difference or not, but the Simple Mobile settings are supposed to be set for the Cellular Dat Network APN and the MMS. But if the phone's not even unlocked . . . I don't know what to do.

Guess what! I got my 2G Re-jailbroken, UNLOCKED, and activated on Simple Mobile yesterday! YAY! Don't ask me how it got done...I had a very skilled High School "geek helper" I found on CL help me by remote access and phone ($10 bucks through PayPal and it took several hours). All I know for sure is we downloaded something called iReb 4.0 & 4.1 RC2, downgraded to 3.1.2, and installed a custom firmware that came already jailbroken and unlocked. When it comes time I can unlock my 3G, I plan to get his help again.

I do have one last problem to solve. Cydia crashes back to the 2nd Home screen every time I open it. It trys to load data for a minute or two, then stops with no error message or anything. Just back to the icon page. So until I find out how ti re-install it, I have no installer for my other apps and customizations. Redsn0w still hangs at the waiting for reboot page, and I'm scared to mess with my unlock, so I don't know how to fix my Cydia yet. Any ideas would be appreciated.
