Thread: Can't select carrier

Can't select carrier
So I'm sitting in Afghanistan with an AT&T phone and an international plan...lol.
ok here are the particulars:
iPhone 4
4.1
02.10.04
JB'd via JBme
ultrasnow installed a while back but deleted for obvious reasons.
Activated AT&T SIM card for this phone installed
I should be able to connect to one of the several available carriers I assume but when I try to select one I get a pop up window saying the carrier is no longer available. After that the phone goes back into search for a long period of time. All these signals are good out here. I have a throw away phone from one of these carriers that I use sometimes when I have to. I just would like to be able to accept a call on my phone if I have to...lol.
Anyway, I should be able to connect to one of these carriers and basically internationally roam shouldn't I?
alright...so I apparently did something realy stupid.
I tried the network reset to see if I could get the ATT carrier to come up in the list. Didn't work...after several tries.
So as I mentioned earlier I had removed ultrasnow. When I looked in the mobile substrate thing on SBS I saw ultrasnow. For some stupid reason I flipped it on knowing I had uninstalled it already. At this point the phone went into a crash loop and would only come up in safe mode. After several restarts it is now getting the boot logo and well that's about it. So now it just keeps restarting.
So uh...what do I do now?Last edited by Sarge78; 01-13-2011 at 09:12 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

You need to have your shsh blobs on file if you want to restore to 4.1
Maybe you can run tinyumbrella and kick it out of loop...
I'd try that first...
Download for windows.......http://http://cache.firmwareumbrella.com/downloads/tinyumbrella-4.21.02.exe
Run as administrator in compatibility mode with XP and click the "kick device out of recovery loop" optionLast edited by Turnamental; 01-13-2011 at 09:30 PM.

I did manage to get tiny umbrella to get it out of the loop. It's in recovery mode now. I don't have the SHSH files on my computer. I'm hoping I am able to get them pulled from Cydia but if not the guy that JBd the phone has them.
So now that i'm in recovery the only thing left is to restore the SHSH right?
OK...kicked the phone out of recovery mode and now we are back to the boot logo. The little swirly thing shows up, moves around for a second and then goes still. I'm assuming this means...oh wait...it just restarted again....back to square one.
I'm so tempted to just let iTunes do it's thing but I have been seeing the havoc that has been causing latelyLast edited by Sarge78; 01-13-2011 at 10:03 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Well, it really won't hurt you because you have a legit sim...
If you DO let iTunes take care of it, it will install 4.2.1 and baseband 3.X bla bla
You can still JB via redsn0w but it will be a tethered JB for now...
If you had it JB on 4.1 for a while then CYDIA will have the shsh on file...

Restore with 4.1 stock ipsw

Yes sir...
Just add that line to the end of the host file and do a "shift-restore" to your 4.1 STOCK ipsw that I pointed in the link...
Actually you don't even have to do that!
Just run TSS server in tinyumbrella THEN open iTunes and do a "shift restore" to stock ipsw.
Make sure you go to advanced in tinyumbrella and select change hosts to cydia (do this before you open iTunes and start server)Last edited by Turnamental; 01-13-2011 at 10:30 PM.

I added that to the hosts file...so just run iTunes now?
shift restore the whatchamawho?

TSS server will just sit there buddy...
Download the 4.1 stock firmware FIRST.
Then open TinyUmbrella and run tss server and just minimize it...
Then open iTunes and hold down shift and click restore and point it to that 4.1 firmware you downloaded...
After all that proccess is done then JB with redsn0w.Last edited by Turnamental; 01-13-2011 at 10:42 PM.

ok...iTunes popped up with a box.
It says it has to check the software update server to identify this device....i don't see a button that says restore...it says check or cancel
ohhhhh...ok.
I have to download that file then. Thats gonna take a few days. I guess i'll get that going and then come back to it later
I appreciate the help...this thing is only a little over a month old...IT CAN'T DIE YET!Last edited by Sarge78; 01-13-2011 at 10:42 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

I currently have 12 hours and 53 minutes remaining...thank God I can pick up where it leaves off when the connection dies...firefox I love you
Right now it's cold and wet here...very similar to cold and wet in the states just on the other side of the world.
Thank you for the well wishes and the help. I hope to see an unlock soon so I can use the afghan SIM card in the phone.
You know...I can get unlimited data through an Afghan cell phone carrier

Just keep the phone @ baseband 2.10.04 and you'll see an unlock soon enough. (Not after the restore though) 2.10.04 currently LOCKED
You are very welcome for the help. Hope you get your phone back to working soon. It's not bricked just needs a fresh restore to current(your device) firmware. I'll check back on on you tomorrow night!
Just PM me if you have any questions...

yeah i've been following the 02.10.04 nuttiness. Someday...

I've got 2 or 3 hours left on this download so i've still got time.
I already have limera1n saved on my comp. Could I jb with that?
I was sitting here messing with it going through the steps up to the point of the shift restore. I'd rather be able to get to that point now and then follow through later when the file is done downloading.
iTunes will not give me the restore button. It keeps wanting to 'check the software update server to identify this device'
is that normal?
woohoo...tinyumbrella says it has 4.1, 4.2.1, and 4.2b3 for my phone. Just waiting on the download now.
Mods: I'm sure this thread should have been in another forum...please feel free to move it as necessary.
well after 12 hours of downloading it suddenly stopped and closed out the download. i didn't get all 590mb of the download so here we go again. I REALLY hate the internet over here.Last edited by Sarge78; 01-14-2011 at 10:47 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

That sucks about the download man. But that's awesome on the SHSH blobs!

You could JB with limera1n for sure. I just like redsn0w. It uses limera1n anyway.iPhone 4S iOS 5.0 Non JB

Mission Accomplished
Downloading Cydia now

ok...i got it recovered but when i tried to install limera1n the cydia icon was just a square. The phone is searching for activation to but of course there is no at&t out here. So i restored it again and waited for everything to load this time. only real problem now is I still can't get a signal out here...I'm going to run greenpoison and then mess with it again...i might just go ahead and let it upgrade then run redsnow...idk
trying again with greenpoison. I'm downloading cydia now. before it had downloaded it but the icon was just a white square and when i touched it nothing would happen. cydia wouldn't open. This time there was a white loader icon and it is letting me download cydia but it still doesn't seem right.
got it all going. Greenpoison FTW.
I have a activation error though. I'm sure the fact that i am unable to connect to the ATT network has something to do with it but according to the ATT website i have to activate my sim through itunes...i'm not sure how that works. I guess since i started with a fresh install the software wants another activation. I'm wary of hitting the wrong button in itunes and loosing my jailbreak. What's the next step? I would like to activate...
ok...I think this will be the last post.
I was never able to get activation. I finaly resotred the phone again and let iTunes do all it's magic with restoring the stuff that was there from the last update. Still nothing. I went on the ATT website and added the international roaming plan while it was doing it's thing. Suddenly we had signal after I elected to pay ATT $5.99 a month for $3/min. hmmm...i'm sure the two actions had nothing to do with each other though. just seemed odd that it worked at the same time.
So...going through limera1n now because greenpoison failed a few times...wish me luck.
yep i'm in and all is well...just struggling to get a decent enough connection to anything to download repositories and stuff...thanks for the help!!!!Last edited by Sarge78; 01-16-2011 at 05:58 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost
