I am guessing you were only able to save 4.2.1 SHSH then right? If so then 4.2.1 is your only option for restoring. If you want to preserve your baseband just google "how make iphone 4 4.2.1 custom"

Did the search and find two things that are putting mr off upgrading for now... GPS functionality is not reliable and it is a tethered jailbreak with 4.2.1 and my baseband.

Ya, I would say your best option is to wait for the untethered jailbreak to come out, then all the jailbreaks like pwnage tool should be updated properly.
