I just restored my 3GS to 4.0 from 4.0.1 (I was going to sell it, then decided not to) and jailbroke with jailbreakme.com which I had used the first time. Then I installed ultrasn0w 1.2 and successfully unlocked so I could use a Canadian pre-paid SIM.
I installed several other packages (I had lots of Cydia apps) and everything seemed to work fine for a couple days.
Then I had to reboot (I can't remember why) and when the phone had restarted the unlock was gone. Ultrasn0w was still there of course, but the SIM could not be read (Invalid SIM).
So I restored again, going through all the steps, and the same thing happened again after a day or two. This time, when I restored there seems to be no phone service at all, even with the official SIM card. I've now tried restoring once again, without luck. There are no signal bars, and the phone doesn't work. Itunes doesn't give any indication that anything is wrong, though, and the carrier settings were updated as they should be after the restore.
Has anyone had anything like this happen or have any suggestions?
A few things that might be considered. TinyUmbrella reports this phone as 3GS 4.1, though the firmware is 4.0. Also, I have not been able to get redns0w to recognize the IPSW 4.0, but it will recognize 4.1 and 4.2.1 despite my phone currently running 4.0. The most recent restore I jailbroke with redsn0w instead of jailbreakme.com, with redsn0w recognizing the 4.1 FW.
Any thoughts would be very appreciated!

You shouldn't use redsnow to jailbreak a 4.0 phone. It is meant for 4.1 and 4.2.1 which is why it only recognizes those firmwares. Restore to 4.0 again, use jailbreakme.com or limera1n to jailbreak. Then if ultrasnow 1.2 isn't working for you use 1.1-1.
The thing is that ultrasn0w 1.2 worked flawlessly for several days. Any idea what could cause the unlock to suddenly stop working after a reboot, twice, and then phone service to stop altogether?
Just did another restore, to the stock 4.0 rather than a custom and this time the phone signal bars and service worked, but ONLY until I restored the previous backup.
Tried once again and this time set up as a new phone. So far so good. It seems that there was something in my phone's settings that was causing the phone to fail.
