jailbreak & unlock without changing baseband

am using iphone 3g, with baseband 5.11.07.
here's the thing, am still on firmware 3.1.2 and should really update my iOS already.

can i jailbreak it and unlock it without going to the ipad baseband?

would really love to hear some expert opinions before i dive into this.

You can use pwnage tool to make a custom firmware with no baseband update in it. 4.0 and up run a lot slower on a 3G though.

are you saying its generally slower on the 3g or its slow when i dont change the baseband?

so i've heard, but some apps (like skype) doesn't work on my firmware anymore & others just freezes and stuff.

someone on another thread told me to use pwnagetool since i shouldn't play with my baseband...but the thing is its only for MAC. can i use redsn0w but not change my baseband?

btw i downloaded both redsn0w_win_0.9.6b5 & edsn0w_win_0.9.6b6..

Ya you would need a pwnage tool made custom firmware to preserve your baseband. I only have a 3GS uploaded, but you can PM iYeow, he may have one he can share with you since you dont have a Mac.
