Default iphone 3g on emergency screen

hi, my friend recently gave me his old iphone. i think its a 3g not sure though. anyways, im having a problem getting into it. he told me the last thing he did to it was use a reset mode in the phone that wipes everything out, took bout an hour or so. after that he never used it. he gave it to me, i dont plan to activate it but i just want to use it as an ipod and such. the phone is stuck on the emergency calls only screen and it has a usb cord. it has the original sim in it. what can i do to unlock it. when i plug it in to my windows comp and use itunes it never recognizes it. ituens keeps saying something bout software upgrade, but for some reason everytime i try to upgrade it it says it cannot connect. anyways my major concern is how to get into the iphone. im new to iphones so take it easy on me. thanks everyone.

If it is a 3g the lettering on the back of the phone will be gray and if it is shiny you have a 3gs. Like yeow said youre most likely at 4.2.1 and in that case you'll need redsn0w 0.9.6b6 to jailbreak and hactivate it. When you open redsn0w you need to point redsn0w at 4.2.1 ipsw and then follow the directions in redsn0w.
