Is it worth it to upgrade from 4.0.2 to 4.2.1? 3GS Oldboot

Hey,

So I currently have an oldboot 3GS at 4.0.2. It's currently unlocked. I don't really need an unlock, cause I'll be on ATT for the next year, by the end I hope to upgrade to another phone.

I would like to know if it's worth it to update the FW on the phone. Currently There's some issues with winterboard and custom themes, which I think an upgrade would help. (The dock is messed up, the dock icons are shifted a few cm up so is the "slide to unlock" bar when the phone is locked.). Also if the phone is locked, it won't shut the screen off, but if it's unlocked the screen locks and shuts off like normal.

It's a bit annoying cause I seem to forget to press power to turn the screen off and it drains my battery.

I don't have SHSH blobs for any other FW at all, not even my current one, so I don't think I'll be able to restore it.

If you don't need unlocking, upgrade to 4.2.1 and jailbreak with Redsn0w 0.9.6b6. Simple as that

Being on the old boot means you will have an untethered jb, so yay for that.

Yeah, being on the old boot was the main reason I considered it. But I wanted to know if everything is working with 4.2.1, Last I read on redmond, it said Cydia and some mobilesubstrate dependent apps weren't working correctly.. Hopefully that's all solved by now?

Also, I don't see an option to hactivate the phone.. Does it automatically hactivate it?.. Can I disable it and activate it normally? (by selecting deactivate?)

Redsn0w automatically hacktivates. As for the problems you listed, that I don't know. Jailbreaking itself is a risk you take, so you'd just have to see for yourself. You can avoid hacktivating by simply activating before you jailbreak with Redsn0w.

Ok, so I went ahead and upgraded. The only thing I see so far is Activator giving me the "Your iOS version is too high" or something along that line. I haven't checked if it works or not, but that's what poped up first time I downloaded Winterboard (which downloaded/updated MobileSubstrate). So far, the skins have the same problem as before, but I think that's just cause those are iP4 themes. (different screen size)

The Activator has not being updated yet , so not everything will work at IOS 4.2.1 for your 3gs
If you have 4.1 shsh blob, I suggest you downgrade back to 4.1 and be able to use all those beautiful themes.

I can't, cause I don't have any other blobs =(.

Oh well, I modified Elite Pro HD to make it work. (Changed the dock, changed the lock screen, and modified it to make it tap to unlock)..

I'm content with how it's working right now, but Hopefully they'll update Activator in the coming weeks. =D..

Is there anything else that's not working in 4.2.1 that I should know? Don't wanna come across something one day and get really upset.. Rather get upset right now and deal with it =P

Wow, you seems to know your stuffs. Atleast you know how to modify it to make it work.
When the untethered jailbreak is released and the majority of jailbreakers can get untethered jailbreak, i am sure the developers will update the activator to make it compatible with IOS 4.2.1

Thanks mate, Yeah I was an active member on Cyanogen's scene (A custom ROM for Android phones.) Plus I do program a bit so I'm not "noob" when it comes to these things.

Anyway: I did get most of the stuff to work.
Iconoclasm works perfectly, even though the app says 3.x to 4.1 only.

Most of the themes I've tried work perfectly after I modded them. This includes Elite Pro HD and 24k. I can upload the modified files (only) if anyone needs them (and anyone who's reading this, I can help fix your theme if it messes up the lockscreen and dock icons).

Of course, with that said, Winterboard poses no problem (out of the box mods need modification. Lol, like the Transparent Dock needs to be fixed.)

Out of curiosity, were there some changes to SBSettings?... Cause I can't seem to open SBS when I'm in some apps, for example, It won't open in Cydia. Gets annoying cause I have my screen set to lock in 5 seconds, and also have it to disable 3G and wifi when locked. So I have to either remember to change my lock settings, or keep hitting the screen to keep it active.. lol. With SBS I had a toggle to turn off auto-lock. (Also, is there a better "thing" than SBS now?.. When I first started with iPhones, the app was called BossPrefs, then SBS came out, is anything better out now?)

For some odd reason my phone keeps saying I'm running out of space, and need to delete some videos or pictures.. It's a 16GB 3GS which was just factory restored and jailbroken about 3 hours ago. Lol. I didn't even transfer any music over.. root has 70MB of space and var has about 14gb..

Maybe its an error with 4.2.1.....?
