Default Iphone 3gs on 3.1.3 upgrade to 4?

    Hi,

Sorry, I've spent ages going through the guides/forum and confused myself. So I thought it would best to just ask.

I have an iphone 3Gs model MC137LL currently jailbroken and unlocked on custum FW 3.1.3 with Pwnagetool. BB is 05.11.07 and iBoot is 359.3. I have saved 3.1.3 SHSHs with TinyUmbrella. I would like to upgrade to 4.? and was wondering the simplest/most reliable upgrade method.

    Thanks in advance

    Duncan

You just need to use pwnage tool to make a custom 4.1 or 4.2.1 then restore to that in itunes. Make sure you dont do the ipad baseband update, say no to that. This will preserve your baseband so that you can still unlock after restoring.

You can use this guide if you want: iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS Using PwnageTool (Mac) [4.1]

Nice one! Last question, is there any reason not to go to 4.2.1? If I can preserve the BB surely it's best to be as up to date as possible?

You can go to 4.2.1 if you want. It is just a little harder. You need the latest version of pwnage tool and you have to add the bundle in manually as detailed in update 3 on the latest post on the dev team blog. It is a minimum bundle so doesn't even install cydia. You have to use redsnow 0.9.6b6 to install cydia after the restore is completed.

Maybe I'll stick to 4.1 for now then. Thanks again for your help.

So, it ran on rails up to the point where itunes gave me the "this device isn't eligible for the requested build" message.

Does this mean I have to upgrade to 4.2.1 because apple isn't signing 4.1 off. Or can I use the SHSHs that I've saved on TinyUmbrella?

You can use your 4.1 SHSH if you have them.

    More questions, sorry.

So I've got 3.1.3, 4.0, 4.0.1 and 4.1 saved in TU and, I think, in Cydia. So what do I do now? Can I just start TSS server in TU, open itunes and then restore to the custom 4.1 fw that I created earlier?

I read in your TinyUmbrella guide that TU won't stop the BB from being updated, is this still a problem with a custom FW?

    Cheers,

    Duncan

Yup you can do that. The custom firmware will preserve your baseband.
