Default Help unlocking iPhone 3GS 16gb on 4.0

I purchased a used iPhone and I want to wipe it clean and do my own unlock on it. The iPhone:

    3GS, 16gb, 4.0 (8A283) and firmware 05.13.04

I am on a macbook pro intel running 10.6

    I don't think I have SHSH's saved.

How do I know if I have new or old boot device?

I tried to used Jailbreakme.com and it put Cydia on, however the icon is white and it indicates there are some errors. So I just want to start all over. What do you suggest (4.0, 4.1, etc?) and how do I go about doing it? This will be my wifes phone so I just want it to run reliably.

    Thanks!

Download tiny umbrella to find out what SHSH you have. Also download idetector to find out your bootrom. Then you can go from there.

Okay, I am not sure if I am giving your the correct info on the SHSH. This phone (prior to my doing it right now) has never been unlocked (so I was told) if that helps.

    Here is a screen shot:

And I cannot figure out how to download iDetector for OS X.

    Thanks!

Download tiny umbrella from here: The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
You need the newest version. Connect your device and press save SHSH.

On Mac use this to check your bootrom version: iClarified - iPhone - How to Check the Bootrom Version of Your iPhone (Mac)
