upgrade without losing unlock

hey iguys, i need some advice on 'formatting' my iphone. I'll try and make the story short, asked for factory unlocked iphone on holiday in china, was jailbroken and unlocked but they didn't tell me, went to update a month later (from 3.1.2 to 3.1.3) and got locked out of my phone, tried various JB's and unlocks but eventually took it to a phone repair place who managed to JB and unlock again. I have enjoyed playing with the jB features immensely since, but have found that it is too clogged with useless apps and themes and stuff so i want to start again. However I am scared if try to reset the settings that it will get stuck on the carrier lock screen again. Any advice on the best method to format cydia and normal apps and setting without losing unlock would be much appreciated. Oh and I would like to upgrade to 4.0 if possible, thanks in advance!

Dowload Tiny Umbrella, connect iPhone, select save all SHSH blobs. Needed for all 4.x iOS firmware.

A custom firmware IS required to keep your unlockable modem firmware/baseband.

Phone is 3gs 16gb, if i save my shsh blobs and restore with 4.0 cfw will it retain my unlock?

If you haven't saved your SHSHs before you can't get them now. You'll only get 4.2.1. As long as you use a custom fw, even going to 4.2.1 (if you don't have SHSHs) you can preserve the baseband and maintain the unlock. You'll need pwnagetool. If you don't have a Mac, you'll have to find someone to make you one. First find out if you have SHSHs first.

I am almost new here but would like to ask some small questions related to the one on this forum.
I have the Iphone 4, 4.1, 02.10.04, still locked under AT&T, jailbroken by Greenp0ison, and using Win XP.

my questions are:
1- How can i save my SHSH files? (and for what do i need them in future?)
2- how can i upgrade to 4.2 but staying on baseband 02.10.04?
3- will it be possible to unlock my Iphone ( when the unlock is released)without loosing my jailbreak?

1) you can save your SHSHs in Cydia by going to the homescreen and selecting "make my life easier". You can also do so by downloading TinyUmbrella (at thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com) and clicking "Save SHSHs".

2) you can upgrade to 4.2.1 and preserve your baseband by using a custom firmware created by PwnageTool.

3) you can unlock with the new unlock without having to restore and rejailbreak. It is most likely going to be Ultrasn0w which is a simple install through Cydia.

3. No. Unlock requires Ultrasnow which requires a jb.

You can use PwnageTool on iP4 for 4.2.1. It's just a pain in the butt. You have to download bundles for it and then run Redsn0w after the restore to custom 4.2.1 to get Cydia.

Ok i checked in cydia and i have all my shsh blobs but do i have to use a mac with pwnagetool? aren't there any pc equivalents? and what do u mean by get someone to make me one?

Do u mean get someone to make me a cfw? I have a 4.0 cfw I found on the net, can I shift+restore in iTunes to update and keep my baseband/unlock?
