Apple Canada by default provides factory unlocked phones. I hear once you insert an activated simcard, the iphone is locked to that provider. I dont know how far this is true.
I got a brand new phone from Apple Store replacing my faulty locked iphone. I did not have a valid activated simcard at that time. So I gave the agent a non-active simcard from the provider.
The agent connected the phone to iTune and inserted the card, but no carrier activation was done. I know that as when I insert a simcard it always asks me for activation. When I reboot the phone, I am stuck at the emergency call menu unless I insert the inactive simcard.
When I tried a different provider simcard, iphone asks me for activation again. However then I go to General Settings --> About, I see the provider no1 shown under Carrier.
My question: is the phone still unlocked until I insert a valid activated simcard (whichever provider) and it will lock to that first provider I insert?
In that case it will probably be locked to Telus. I had heard of that whole semi-unlocked thing until the first carrier sim is put in but dont know much about that.
