You can only downgrade baseband if you have a 5.8 bootloader iPhone 3G. Use f0recast to find that out. 4.2.1 can be jailbroken just fine on a iPhone 3G. He is probably referring to the newer devices where it is a tethered jailbreak on 4.2.1

    Bootloader: 6.2

    Jailbreakable? YES (Always)
    Unlockable? NO
    Tethered? NO

    *What does tethered mean?

Tethered means you would have to run the jailbreak again after every reboot. Dont worry iPhone 3G doesnt have that issue. The 6.2 bootloader means no downgrading baseband for you right now.

That sucks. It seems that the only option is to upgrade then, to 06.15.00 - are there any effects with this BB? Such as wireless working OK.

But first, to upgrade to 4.2.1. I have no idea where to start here - do you have a link to a detailed step by step to help me achieve both steps?

If something goes wrong, or in the future can i go back, reverting changes?

You should read all about this first: Dev-Team Blog

If you want to go for it you can use this: iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak and Unlock Your iPhone 3G Using RedSn0w (Windows) [4.2.1]

It was on "Downloading jailbreak data" with an image of a hard drive - The phone started OK but would then not go into DFU mode, not being recognised by the computer so i tried it on another PC. The upgrade to 4.2.1 was successful and then using redsn0w on another computer was successful and updated the baseband.

Cydia how been stuck on "Updating sources" "Downloading packages" for around an hour now after adding the ultrasn0w repo.

    Result! Done it!

I'm now on 4.2.1 with BB: 06.15.00 - and my t-mobile sim is working.

Thank you very much x98car, it's good to get something that knows what they're talking about.

Just wondering the difference from 3.1.3 to 4.2.1? It looks the same visually to me.
There's probably loads, but do you have any app recommendations?

Just a quick one, how do i go about putting songs and media on this thing? You have to do it via iTunes? Would the jailbreak be a problem for this?

Yup, just use iTunes. Jailbreak won't give you a problem.
