Hey guys,
A friend of mine got an iPhone 3G from Craigslist, which failed to upgrade to the newest iOS. It's now stuck at Recovery mode. He came to me to see if I could fix it.
I thought, "Well, this should be easy, get to DFU mode and all will work out fine!" -- no dice. If I try restoring through iTunes (from Recovery mode, not DFU) I get an error 1015. If I try to restore through DFU mode, I get an error 1600. If I try to restore through a custom ipsw made with PwnageTool, I get an error 1604.
So, my question is, Can someone please PM me an ipsw with which I can fix this? I think it needs to be one without a baseband, because I've read that the reason the iPhone initially had the error 1015 due to a previously installed iPad baseband. And the only way to re-initialize the phone is to restore through Pwned DFU mode, to an update WITHOUT a baseband.
Is this correct?
Best,
Proxin

We cannot provide links top custom firmware anymore. If you have a Mac you can make one yourself. If not see here: Let me google that for you

Ah, I see - that makes sense. I was wondering why it was ever allowed in the first place, lol, as most boards are scared of getting busted by "the man" (I would be too, though)
I was wondering if you could clarify though - when you posted and said to use a custom firmware without a baseband update, how do you create this in PwnageTool? I have created two - one With the iPad ipsw checked, and one Without; both of these ended up with me getting error 1600 of some sorts. What steps do you do in PwnageTool to make that?

You would use the one where you said no to the iPad baseband. that is the one with no baseband update in it. If you are getting the 1600 error it normally means you are not entering pwned dfu. Make sure to do the dfu part with pwnage tool first before trying to restore to it in itunes. If you need more help with that you can see here: [How To] Use Pwnage Tool to make a custom firmware

I got an error from iTunes when I tried restoring to 4.2.1 without baseband, I think it was an error 1600. I was using redsn0w to get to pwned DFU mode.
I tried going to 3.1.3 like you told someone else in the thread, but unfortunately I got an error 1015 in that case. I was using redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 and selected a 4.2.1 ipsw for it instead of 3.1.3, because it wouldn't recognize the 3.1.3 ipsw.
Any help would be appreciated... this thing has been bugging me all week...

Amazing. This worked perfectly - I was able to successfully update to my custom 4.2.1 I created with PwnageTool earlier this week.
It seems redsn0w did not properly put me into DFU mode, PwnageTool however did the trick perfectly. Now I am extremely glad to have a working Hackintosh partition!
Thanks a ton, x98car.
Sort of off-topic, but I noticed the phone runs a little slow on 4.2... is there anything I can do to make it faster? I have heard that you can remove some shadow files that are unnecessary or something... could anyone direct me to a page about that?

I think there is a thread around here about removing some daemons, not sure where it is or how safe it is though.

Hi guys, Im going crazy already. Ive done lots of researches, tried a bunch of things and nothing seems to work.
Details: I have 2 iPhone 3G 16gb's.
iPhone 1 was running 4.2.1 05.15.05 locked.
iPhone 2 I got it stuck in Recovery
iPhone 1. I tried to restore to Pwnage cooked 4.2.1 06.xx to unlock as Ive done tons of 3G's with no issues. It returned an error and went straight to Recovery mode. Since then Ive tried restoring to:
-Stock 3.1.3
-Stock 4.1
-Stock 4.2.1
-Restore and Update on iTunes
-Pwnage 4.1 06.xx
-Pwnage 4.2.1 06.xx
-TinyUmbrella Exit Recovery every time I attempted to restore.
-RecBoot Exit Recovery every time as well.
Still returning 1600 error.
iPhone 2. I got it in recovery. So Im assuming its a similar situation with iPad's baseband.
-iTunes 10.1.2 (17)
-Mac OS X 10.6.6
Please help me out guys! Im going insane here.

iPhone 3GS with bb 6.15 and stock firmware 4.1 restore needed restart loop
i recently bought an iPhone 3gs that came with bb 6.15 and stock firmware 4.1
and 2 days ago it randomly lagged like hell while i was playing Ninjump.
i went to verify what happened and an alert popped sayingthat i needed to restore my iPhone because i couldnt make any more calls or receive any.
and it restarted maybe a minute after the dialog. After that, it just continues in a loop.
i tried restoring to a stock firmware 4.1 and jailbroke and unlock using redsn0w and ultrasn0w
it worked after around 15 restore tries and it went back to the same state right now
How can i resolve this problem?
SPECS:
iPhone 3GS (new bootrom) BB 6.15.00 (iPad) stock firmware 4.1
jailbroken using redsn0w 0.9.6 rc16 (win)
and unlocked using ultrasn0w 1.2.2
PS.
is it possible that it screwed up because of all my packages in cydia??

Dude, if you restore the phone you HAVE, and this is not negotiable, set up as a new phone. Just sync whatever you wanna keep such as images, songs, videos, contacts list, apps, etc. Then do the restore and set up as new phone. Proceed with the unlock and then re-sync your desired data.
If you restore from back up, your phone will have endless issues.
Just wondering, why are u still on 4.1? you can upgrade to the latest 4.3.2 and still unlock it with the iPad baseband.
This is what I would do:
Download Pwnage Tool 4.3.2 (or 4.1.3 I think if you wanna stay on 4.1)
Download the ipsw firmware file.
Have Pwnage tool cook a custom firmware.
Enter Pwned DFU mode following the Pwnage tool DFU walkthrough.
Restore in iTunes with custom firmware.
Set up as a new iPhone.
Sync my apps, multimedia, contacts and stuff back to the phone.
Unlock with ultrasn0w.
Hope it helps. God bless.

I can provably send you via skype or something the custom firmware. Then guide u to the pwnage dfu. As far as the content, you will have to either restore with the custom firmware and DO restore from back up. Then u sync the desired stuff and finally restore again but this time set up as new iPhone.
