Question 4.0.2 iPhone 4 unlock and activate...

It's not as if I haven't done my fair share of research on this but I keep hitting walls when it comes to getting my phone unlocked and activated :/

Story: I bought this off a guy (I trust) and he told me that it was on Vodafone and that I would need to activate it first.

First of all I don't have a vodafone sim.

I managed to use limerain to jailbreak the device and install SAM and SAMPrefs and then OpenSSH.

But the problem is both redsn0w and tinyumbrella aren't working for me.

    I have tried redsn0w versions 0.9.5b5-5 and 0.9.6b6

I try to load the 4.0.2 file on (iPhone3,1_4.0.2_8A400_Restore.ipsw)

But it just comes up 'unable to recognise specified ipsw' so I can't go any further to 'deactivate' the phone (I have downloaded from multiple sources to check in case faulty.)

So I thought about the 4.1 and looked into it but obviously I don't want to update my baseband (which is 01.59.00) so I try to use tinyumbrella but I'm really not sure what I'm doing... it comes up on the log with the following when I press 'save shsh':

You have saved your iPhone4 4.2.1 (8C148) SHSH locally and the request was sent to CYDIA. This means that CYDIA DOES have your SHSH. Do NOT bug semaphore about the Cydia home page showing this version.

And I have 2 saved SHSHs in the general tab:
    iPhone4 4.2.1
    iPhone4 4.2b3

Why do I have two? Why do neither state anything about my 4.0.2 firmware?

    So my situation is:
    Iphone 4 unactivated but jailbroken
Installed cydia, sam and samprefs along with openssh
    Iphone 4 firmware 4.0.2
    Baseband 01.59.00

Can anyone help me as I have been at this for a few days now.

    Thanks in advance...

If you are passed the emergency call screen then you are activated. To unlock it just install ultrasn0w from cydia. No versions of redsnow support 4.0-4.0.2 on iPhone 4.

I'm passed the emergency screen. Though nothing happened, got an O2 sim in it, I uninstalled sam and sam prefs, reinstalled ultrasn0w and I've still got nothing :/

When I uninstalled sam however, it did come up with O2 but eventually no signal. I reinstalled sam again and it doesnt even come up with a services section in settings. What should I do?

If you are installing ultrasnow 1.2 see if you can find 1.1-1 to install instead and see if that makes a difference

Do you have any idea where I would find it? :/ i've had a look around and it's nowhere.

If anyone else wants to have a shot at unlocking my phone feel free! Still not able to use it and its killing me

emailed the ultrasn0w devteam to see if they can send it to me and if they think it would make a difference.

Keep the suggestions coming people, I'm dying here.

Ok, managed to install 1.1-1 through ifile and verified the install in cydia. It's recognizing that I have an o2 sim in my phone now but I'm not getting any signal at all. What should I try now? I bought the sim on eBay and it was obviously used when I got it. Is there a chance that the sim doesn't work anymore? I don't have another micro sim to check it but maybe if I could find a shop that would check it for me?

I have no idea but I have narrowed the problem down a little, when I install ultrasn0w 1.2 I don't even get an option to choose my carrier, same as when I don't have ultrasn0w installed, but with ultrasn0w 1.1-1 the carrier settings are normal and it registers that it is on o2 on 'automatic'

Hope this helps with the mystery

The mystery is I dont know exactly what you are trying to do. You have a O2 sim you got off ebay, but you say the phone is locked to vodaphone? What carrier are you trying to use it with?

My aim is to put my tesco sim in. The phone needed activating using a vodafone sim card but I believe I'm passed that now though the fact that I'm coming into problems such as my o2 sim (a sim to verify that it is unlocked before I cut up my tesco full sim) is not receiving service. Would his be a problem with the phone? The sim? Is it really activated properly since I took no steps
Except jailreaking with limerain to do so. Should I risk cutting my sim up just now? I'm really at a loss here.

    Thanks for the help.

Ok, if you have access to the phone, then you are activated.

If you got a O2 sim off ebay then it doesnt have service so wont help you do anything in proving unlock. The sim needs service to get a signal.

To test the unlock you need to use a sim from a different carrier that has service.

You need to borrow a micro SIM other than vodophone from a friend, to test that the phone is properly unlocked. Tesco sells iphones and have micro SIMS you should not need to cut down your SIM just get your service transferred to a new Tesco Micro sim.
