Default Using UK iPhone 4 in USA

I'm almost ready to buy an iPhone 4 here in the UK, but for one question. I'm a US resident, spending most of my time in the USA, however, I'm here in the UK for about 5 months. If I buy a UK iPhone 4, will I be able to use it once I leave the UK, and head home to the States?

I already inquired on the Official Apple forums, and got this response:

The ONLY place to purchase a genuinely no lock iPhone in the UK is from an Apple retail store any payment method or from Apple direct as long as your credit card has a UK address and the iPhone is sent to that address (security)

    No carriers sell unlocked iPhones
Now as I'm buying my iPhone 4 used, that's a bit of a problem.

Simply put, is it possible to Unlock the iPhone myself, even though it was bought used, and on the O2 network, so I can use it with an AT&T Sim card?

    All the best, -Jacob

UK iPhones can be unlocked through O2, I think it depends on how long you're with them etc.

On a side note, I'm from the USA currently living in the UK. I have an iPhone 4 that's locked to ATT. If you buy an iPhone 4 here in the UK let me know if you're interested in swapping them, maybe for cash as well.

So short answer, no I can't do it myself?
I've not been an O2 customer for long, just got a cheap pay as you go phone with 'em.
