Default Trying to stay up to date with all of this

Ok I buy and sell a good bit of iPhones so I am always trying to restore or jailbreak and unlock but wow you really have to stay on top. I just used tint umbrella for the first time on a 3g and all was good. Now I have a jailbroken gs @ 4.01 and I wanted to make a custom firmware just really to restore and wipe all of the old owners info. When I hit save shsh on TU it shows 4.21. I tried looking on the phone at cydia to see what version is saved but I can not find it anywhere. I am assuming that the old owner jailbroke but never save the shsh and now that 4.21 is here I just saved it . So I guess I am just trying to confirm that at this point I would have to manually erase his data because I cannot get signed on 4.01 and there is no way to do do 4.21 without the baseband upgrading along with the firmware. I guess I could try the ipad firmware but I am kind of scared of that.

You don't have to use the ipad baseband, restore to custom firmware of 4.2.1 created by Pwnage tools of 4.1.3 to preserve your baseband to be unlocked by Ultrasn0w.

You can read more about this from here
